An Internet Magazine

The 2007 symposium participants created an Internet Magazine about Peaceful Moments. You’ve heard of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., heroes of peace. The students found other stories in which someone reached out, sat down, stood up, or walked out in order to create a peaceful solution to conflict. Some of the stories are about momentary respites and some are about lasting change. Some are about life and death and some are about public behavior. Some involve saints and some involve scoundrels; others show the power of ordinary people. We hope you’ll find some inspiration looking through our Peaceful Moments Magazine.

A Sample Day at the Symposium …

(Compiled from previous years)

The students begin their day by waking up and have the option of going to breakfast. After breakfast students participate in a Conflict Skills Training workshop on campus with university instructors. In small groups, they learn how to map out a conflict. The students then walk the 3 blocks back to Hardin House for a balanced lunch of deli sandwiches, a salad bar, fruit salad, and dessert. In the afternoon the students meet with distinguished university faculty. The discussion topics range from “how to manage a meeting at school” to “Revamping the United Nations.”

After lunch on one day the students meet in the UT Music School with Professor Glenn Richter, who challenges them about the ethical dilemmas in unauthorized downloading of music and movies. Following this discussion, the students meet with Admiral Bobby Inman, Interim Dean of the UT LBJ School of Public Affairs, who engages them with stories about his time spent in the United Nations and the CIA and challenges them with ideas about the Next Step in international institutions. He also discusses how his experiences in these prominent organizations have affected

After these challenging lectures and discussions, the students meet artist and videographer Harold McMillan for an orientation and planning of their music video. After storyboarding the project, the students walk back to the dorm for dinner and nightly activities.

The students watch Remember the Titans on a big screen in one of the UT viewing rooms after dinner. The movie stimulates a discussion about race, sports and education. Afterwards, everyone goes back to the dorm to play music, learn an ethnic dance, or discuss the day’s events. The students write in their journals before lights out, and they go to sleep excited for another day.
