2008 UTPCR Summer Symposium June 15-28

UTPCR Mission

The mission of the UT Project on Conflict Resolution is to facilitate the study and practice of positive handling of conflict and potential conflict in contemporary culture, including planning and development, through research, education, and outreach. People need to deal effectively with each other, even if they have nothing in common. The UTPCR’s projects reach into art, business, community, healthcare, terrorism, religion, education, families and relationships, journalism, sports, music, and other issues involving contemporary culture. It’s what makes arbitrary things seem natural to any particular group of human beings, ranging from their food preferences and their family traditions to their work customs and forms of entertainment. It is what they take for granted. Contemporary culture touches virtually every aspect of people’s daily lives, making it a prime breeding ground for conflicts of all types and an ideal focal point for the Project. It is not exclusive in its perspectives and activities. That is, we don’t think we already know all the answers. The Project organizes and creates opportunities for faculty and students to study these matters. In addition, it brings the university together with community members to seek answers to specific conflict issues through programs and events. Download our brochure.

What We Do

The faculty of the UTPCR teach courses to UT students as part of the University’s mission. Organizing as the UTPCR allows us to also provide skills training, mediation and facilitation services, community programs, and public education, as well as to develop new courses. It allows for research, mentoring and internships that go beyond the basics. It also allows us to compete for grants that are available only to such organizations. Our primary activities are research and public programs, including a groundbreaking summer program for high school students.

Our primary activities are research, public programs, and service opportunities involving students. Students seek training, provide mediation and facilitation services to the community, host forums, conduct field research to contribute to the study of musicians and social engagement, provide counselors for the summer high school program, volunteer with local schools, and a lot more.

Who We Are

We are a group of faculty and students at The University of Texas in Austin who care about the conflicts that tear people apart. We come from colleges across the campus – Communication, Public Policy, Liberal Arts, Education, Social Work, Natural Sciences, Fine Arts, and Business. We teach courses and conduct research in conflict topics. The UTPCR provides a structure for bringing us together to create new research projects and to create joint projects with the community.

Two registered student organizations are very busy in service and program development, The Society of Professional Mediators and the Willie Nelson Center Students for Peace and Conflict Resolution. The

students include undergraduate and graduate students from across the campus and across the world.

Educational Outreach

Currently, the UTPCR offers an groundbreaking annual summer training program for high school students, the UT Global Ethics and Conflict Resolution Summer Symposium. We have also offered occasional programs for community education and training.

Our plans are to develop our executive education, conference, and outreach programs to offer more opportunities for community members and students alike, to bring together international thought leaders and prominent professionals to focus on specific conflicts and issues. Many of these programs will produce “white papers” of specific solutions with maximum impact.
